Clearing a Tarot Deck
When you bring home a new deck of tarot cards you want to clear them. Clearing is a process of spiritually cleaning the cards to remove any negative energy or blocks that they may have accumulated. When you clear a deck of tarot cards for the first time you are also putting your own energy into the deck. There are many ways one can clear a deck. It’s a matter of preference for the reader.
It is suggested that when one gets a new deck of tarot cards that they are spiritually prepared and cleansed. This is so you can read more accurately. Negative energy and blocks obviously can impede the clarity of a reading. When you clear a tarot deck you are preparing them to use. In addition to clearing the tarot cards many readers also cleanse the space and objects they use in conducting readings also. The room you read in, the table you use and any other things related to the reader and the cards can be cleansed prior to a reading.
The idea is that a spiritually clean space along with the cards gives a clear reading free of the negative or blocking debris that collects naturally. This includes energy from other people and things like unwanted energy. The reason behind being spiritually cleanliness is that it is close to godliness or what ones perception of god is. Clean energy portends positivity. And you want positivity when you are doing a reading.
There are many ways to cleanse your tarot cards. It’s quite easy to do! On the next page I’ve listed the most common ways. Each of these ways corresponds with one of the Five Elements (Earth, Air, Fire, Water, and Spirit).
o Smudging (element of Fire)
o Lunar energy (element of Water)
o Crystals and gemstones (element of Earth)
o Shuffling the deck (element of Air)
o Visualization (Spirit)
Smudging your cards with a stick of white sage is probably the most popular way to cleanse your cards. Another option would be to use a lavender stick, or incense. While you are smudging, use your powers of visualization to “see” the negativity being swept away. Smudging, associated with the element of Fire, has long been associated with purification in rituals. While white sage and lavender work well, you can experiment with other types of incense and smudge sticks. Find one that’s pleasing to you, and your cards will like it too!
Using the power of the full moon involves leaving the deck out somewhere that allows for the light of the moon to shine down upon them. This can be outdoors, or in a window where the moonlight will pass by. Moon energy, like water, is fluid. It “washes” over the cards, cleaning them very effectively. Think of how you feel after a nice bath or shower: clean and rejuvenated! Adding your crystals and gemstones to the mix is a great way to get LOTS more cleaning done. Feel free to also combine the use of smudging along with moon energy. I set my cards in a window alongside my crystals and gemstones during every full moon.
Shuffling the deck is something that should be done before each reading. You can shuffle, and cut the deck. I usually shuffle three times, then cut the deck into thirds. Find a technique that’s comfortable for you. Remember to do a simple meditation while shuffling. This can include using the energy of Spirit as discussed below.
The use of crystals and gemstones is also a great way to help cleanse your deck between uses. I carry a quartz crystal in my tarot bag. Amethyst is another great crystal for clearing the tarot deck. I keep an amethyst pendulum on my reading table, along with my quartz crystal. You don’t have to limit yourself. Experiment with different gemstones and find one that works well with your energy and the energy of your cards. A great resource for learning about the metaphysical properties of gemstones is Healing Crystals.
You may also use Angel or Spirit energy to aid in cleansing your deck. This can involve prayer, chanting, or even visualizing a beautiful white light coming from above and surrounding your cards, sweeping away all of the negativity.
In addition to an initial clearing many readers do little cleanings in between their readings to keep their cards clean. This ensures that any negativity that was picked up in a consultation is dismissed and removed before the next reading. Some readers clean themselves and their cards after every reading and others choose to do it periodically. They may do it on a specific day and time on a regular basis. It doesn’t matter how you clear your cards, all that matters is that you are calling good energy to assist you and removing any negative energy.
Tarot cards are like any other form of divination. All types of divination require some sort of energy in order to conduct the reading. Clearing the cards and space eliminates the spiritual residue that the energy builds. This helps reduce the possibility of inaccurate and false readings clouded by that debris. This is especially true for those readers who let their clients touch the cards. When someone touches a readers cards; their cards are then picking up other peoples energy physically and psychically. In that case, you don’t want the next reading to have the last person’s energy attached to it.
Clearing your tarot deck and space is like giving them fresh air to breathe. You have to breathe fresh air yourself and so do the cards! Cleansing your space, your cards, and even yourself to help you to give you the best reading you can give.
